Stereogum is the leading online community for independent and alternative music tastemakers. With a daily offering of news, commentary and MP3s, the site drives the conversation around the music that matters.
Stereogum writers and columnists identify the best up-and-coming bands and trends before they hit the mainstream. Through features like Premature Evaluation, Progress Report, Album Of The Week, Band To Watch, and Listomania, the site covers the spectrum of alternative and underground music (indie, hip-hop, pop, and metal) and has amassed a passionate readership of music fans, industry insiders, and indie rock stars. Cited for its commentary and band discovery everywhere from The New Yorker to FOX News, Stereogum’s awards and distinguished mentions include the Plug Award for best music blog, Blender‘s Most Influential People in Online Music, Village Voice's Music Blog Of The Year, and Entertainment Weekly‘s Best Music Website.
Stereogum curates some of the most buzzed-about live events at major industry gatherings like SXSW and CMJ, as well as at festivals everywhere from Brooklyn to Reykjavik. Past performers have included Ben Gibbard, Beach House, The Drums, Ted Leo, Screaming Females, and Twin Sister.
Stereogum is seeking NYC-based Editorial Interns for Spring 2015.
The Stereogum Editorial Internship is an exclusive program that accepts a small number of applicants each semester. The program is open to students currently enrolled in journalism and/or creative writing programs.
The internship offered here is multifaceted. The right applicant will be involved with all aspects of the site's editorial and production process, which includes (but is not limited to): assisting writers and editors with research, transcription, and reporting; assembling posts in the site's admin; curating photo galleries; setting up video and audio streams; vetting new artists for coverage; assisting in curation and assembly of live events; and of course writing for Stereogum.
The right applicant will be highly ambitious and deeply plugged into new music, with goals to work in music journalism and/or the field of music. He or she should be a skilled writer with some web background as well as social media savvy.
Stereogum Editorial Interns are expected to work two (2) full days per week; schedules are flexible, however, and will be based on both parties’ needs and availability. Editorial Interns should have access to a laptop and smartphone; additionally, it wouldn’t hurt to own a digital camera and digital audio recorder.
Interested applicants should send a resume, writing sample and cover letter to email@example.com. Please include in the cover letter some reasonably detailed description of your musical tastes (your 10 favorite albums of 2014, perhaps, or 10 artists you'd like to see featured on Stereogum, or just a paragraph on your passion for music and fields of expertise).
