Journalism Internship

Media Organization: Straus News

Company Description

Straus News publishes 14 local weekly newspapers and associated websites in contiguous towns in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Our newspapers and websites focus on local issues that matter to people's everyday lives, from concerns about schools and infrastructure spending to who's who in town and soccer scores. We pride ourselves on our commitment to reporting the tough local stories while highlighting the success and achievements in our neighborhoods.

Job Description

Straus News, which in Manhattan comprises four weekly newspapers, is seeking capable and enthusiastic editorial interns for the fall semester. Interns work out of our Manhattan office on Seventh Avenue, near 28th Street, on stories for the West Side Spirit, Our Town, Our Town Downtown and Chelsea News, covering local neighborhood news on the Upper West Side, Upper East Side, downtown and Chelsea. Interns report on and write everything from arts features to investigations, and will have the opportunity (and are expected) to report on schools, crime, small businesses, the arts, local government and development, as well as write profiles.

We like stories that inform our smart, loyal readers about their neighborhoods, stories that they are not likely to read elsewhere.
Your stories will get published on the front page and in the back of the book. You will leave with a wealth of published clips, with the range of topics and story types determined by your abilities and, at least in part, your interests.

To Apply

Send a note to Richard at editor.dt@strausnews.com that details your specific interests in local journalism and your availability (potential starting date as well as days/times available) for the semester. Please also attach a resume and writing samples/clips, or send links to online clips in the body of the email.
