Journalism Job

Media Organization: New England Newspapers Inc.

Company Description

We are New England Newspapers – The Berkshire Eagle, Bennington Banner, Brattleboro Reformer and Manchester Journal – the newspaper outfit in the Berkshires of Massachusetts and in Southern Vermont that's recently been purchased from Digital First Media by a group of local leaders. Our objective is this: Become the best local newspaper group in the United States.

Job Description

Are you a hot-shot designer? And wouldn’t you love to work for a locally owned newspaper that is reinvesting in its people as well as its print and web products?
New England Newspapers, recently purchased from Digital First Media by a group of local leaders, is rebuilding its four newspapers with new systems, websites and a print redesign with one of the nation’s leading consulting firms. Because the papers had been produced at DFM’s centralized hub, we’re also rebuilding a design and copy desk from scratch.
As part of our redesign, you’ll benefit from an in-depth training program and have an opportunity to help shape the relaunch of our printed newspapers. Our redesign will leave us with a newspaper built to showcase our staff’s best work. We're exploring new and better ways to tell stories and present information to readers and we expect to grow our audience in the months and years to come.
To land this job, we need you to demonstrate that you have strong visual skills and the ability to see new and different ways to illustrate or present a story that is engaging to readers. This role also involves editing and the ability to write reader-oriented headlines. We’d like someone who can teach and coach others on our desk to be the best they can be. And of course you’ll have to get along with the other editors at our publications and manage to get the papers out on deadline.
We offer a competitive pay and benefits package in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. A bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field and a minimum of three years of design and editing experience at a daily or weekly publication is required.
If this sounds like an opportunity that can’t be missed, you’re right.
