Position Information:
Hours: 40 hours per week
Location: Washington, DC
Start Date: June 2019 – December 2019

Intern, Marketplace – DC Bureau:
As the Marketplace DC intern, you will work alongside some of the most skilled journalists in public radio, in a fast-paced and exciting news environment where every day brings new challenges and opportunities for learning. Washington is an environment like no other, and we want you to experience it. The DC intern will have the chance to accompany reporters into the field on assignment, gather tape for stories, sit in on edits, contribute to our website, and attend the daily news meeting, where you can observe the Marketplace idea machine in full swing. You will also manage our studio bookings and order paper towels, when we need them.

Key Learning Goals:
Our aim is for our interns to learn as much as possible about what we do, and how we do it, as well as acquire skills they can take into the world. It is near impossible to leave an internship at Marketplace without a better understanding of business and the economy, as well as a way to tell those stories in a conversational way. We celebrate curiosity at Marketplace. We want to hear your ideas, and we can help you learn how to pitch them.

Responsibilities:
• Learn and perform a variety of production, research, and editorial tasks.
• Assist reporters in developing Web and social media content to accompany and complement their on-air stories.
• Conduct pre-interviews for on-air guests.
• Conduct 'person on the street' interviews.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
• Enrolled Senior in an undergraduate or Master’s program OR have earned a degree within the last 12 months.
• A demonstrated interest in journalism (i.e. produced work for publication, worked at school newspaper/radio, etc.)
• Must have the ability to write, meet deadlines and work independently.
• Must have strong organizational and communication skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft office products with the ability to learn new software programs.
• Self-starter with an appetite for learning audio skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Coursework or experience in journalism, preferably broadcast.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
• Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Physical Demands:
o Required to move about in an office environment and sit for extended periods of time.
o Required to move about in the community.
o Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping.
• Working Conditions:
o Moderate noise level.
o Occasional exposure to prevalent weather conditions.
