Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
Spectrum is seeking an editor-in-chief to lead its award-winning news team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced science journalist to make a big impact on a fascinating field.
Spectrum produces stories that inform, challenge and inspire our audience of scientists. The stories include breaking and conference news, articles based on peer-reviewed papers, op-eds by both scientists and autistic people, award-winning deep dives, data viz and interactives, podcasts and videos.
The editor-in-chief oversees all of these, and so must have a firm grasp of biology, an ability to attend to both the big picture and the details that matter, and impeccable communication skills.

THE ORGANIZATION
Spectrum is funded by the Simons Foundation, but the team functions with full editorial independence.
The editor-in-chief works with the news team, with guidance from a volunteer advisory board, to set the overarching strategy and vision.
Working with the deputy editor, the EIC translates this vision into the day-to-day practices and policies of the magazine.
While the deputy editor oversees the daily operations of the news team, the EIC is responsible for long-term planning, and for setting the overall tone and direction. The EIC also represents the magazine in the science and journalism communities.
The EIC is ultimately responsible for the magazine's quality and for soliciting feedback from both the advisory board and from the readership.
Other responsibilities include overall management of the team, community building and strategic partnerships with syndication partners and autism organizations.
