The North Carolina Justice Center is a progressive research and advocacy organization dedicated to expanding opportunity and protecting the rights of low-income individuals in North Carolina. For over 20 years, the Justice Center has been on the front lines in the courts, at the legislature, in the media, and in communities advocating for positive changes for poor and working North Carolinians. The Justice Center has played a primary role in most of the state’s major policy debates and successfully litigated hundreds of individual cases and class actions.

Job Description

The North Carolina Justice Center is seeking a Courts, Law & Democracy Reporter for NC Policy Watch, to investigate, analyze and report on the federal and state judicial systems. This position will cover criminal and civil justice issues in the General Assembly and executive branch agencies, issues related to elections and voting, and other topics.

Requirements
-BA in Journalism or related field with experience writing about and analyzing legal decisions and/or related policy issues.
-Minimum two years reporting for media outlets, public policy nonprofit, or think tank. Five years preferred.
-Superior written, oral and presentation skills. Previous published articles.
-Proficiency with audio and video equipment and software preferred. Experience with new media technology and social media platforms is required.
-Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, work independently, and support the work of others in the organization.
-Demonstrated commitment to social justice and improving the lives of low-income North Carolinians.
-Some travel and/or weekend and evening availability is required.
