Documented is a nonprofit news organization that produces reporting for and about immigrant New Yorkers. We provide original news stories on the ground-level impact of labor policy, law–enforcement practices, and new federal directives as well as Q&As and instructional guides that inform New Yorkers about food, health and financial aid and legal issues. We have won an Edward R. Murrow Award, Deadline Club award, Online Journalism Award, LION award and others. Our work has been mentioned by The New York Times, The Washington Post, in federal lawsuits, at the New York City Council and many other places.
Job Description
Documented is a growing news organization and we are seeking a Deputy Editor to help shape and oversee our news coverage. We have five full-time reporters covering a wide range of issues and communities. The Deputy Editor will work with these reporters to sharpen their ideas and copy to produce stories in response to the news cycle as well as evergreen content and features about long standing issues in New York City.
The ideal candidate will help elevate Documented’s coverage and bring it closer to the day-to-day news cycle. This person will have experience working in a fast-paced digital newsroom but is open to reporting in new and innovative ways. We pride ourselves on producing news with input from the immigrant communities we seek to serve, allowing them to help shape our coverage.
Documented seeks candidates who are passionate about working with writers from diverse backgrounds. This role will involve managing and taking part in the recruitment of new reporters and editors. An interest in being a manager and helping shape people’s careers, as well as their stories, is an important requirement for this role.

Job duties:
Edit news stories and features
Commission stories from freelancers, staff writers and occasionally photographers and illustrators
Find and recruit freelance writers
Collaborate with our Newsletter Writer to determining what we’ll cover in our thrice-weekly newsletter, Early Arrival
Help manage and mentor Documented’s staff reporters
Job requirements:
Over four years of experience working in news, either digital or print
Experience editing stories in a digital newsroom
A strong understanding of how to measure success of a story from digital analytics to impact
Ability to work with journalists of diverse backgrounds
Preferred qualities (these are not required qualities but will be held in high regard):
You have a documented history of impact in your previous roles as an editor or reporter
Knowledge of the immigration system in the US and/or New York City
Language skills (we publish in English, Spanish, Chinese and Haitian Creole)
Compensation and Benefits
The salary for this role is $80,000-100,000 depending on experience. Health and dental benefits and four weeks paid time off are provided. This job is a hybrid of in-person at our New York office and at home. We highly value lived experiences in the issues we cover as a news organization. We also understand the difficult work realities due to the pandemic and are open to accommodating people with different work requirements.
