Journalism Job
Media Organization: Hell Gate
Company Description
Hell Gate is a seven-month old online publication covering New York City with all the love, humor, and rage that it inspires. We’re dedicated to the idea that if local journalism is to survive and thrive in New York City, journalists must own the means of production. We are a for-profit, worker-owned cooperative—which means that the people who do the work control the company. Read more about Hell Gate at https://hellgatenyc.com/about-us
Job Description
Hell Gate is looking to bring on two writer-editors to join our small but mighty team, on a temporary, three-month basis (with the potential to stay for the long-term).
Does bringing back the dark art of blogging excite you? Are you itching to dive deep into an offbeat NYC story that you can’t picture anywhere else but Hell Gate? And most importantly: does the thought of building a sustainable, worker-owned news outlet that is beholden to no one but our readers and ourselves thrill you? If yes, apply!
Your roles and qualifications:
Hell Gate is small, and our writer-editors do literally everything, from reporting and writing to editing to crafting our social media posts and building out our newsletters.
Ideal candidates should have at least several years experience writing about New York, and should be comfortable in many roles: a breaking news reporter ready to dash to an unfolding scene, an investigative feature writer who can smell a rat and will go the distance to uncover it, an assigning editor who knows which freelance writer would be perfect to cover a story no one else has thought of, a story editor who can coax a raw draft into shining copy, a blogger who can riff on anything, and an opinion writer who can rain fire on her enemies. If even some of this applies to you, please consider applying!
Bonus points for familiarity with NYC communities and scenes that aren’t regularly covered by the media.
The job details:
—These positions are for a three-month, full-time contract, with the potential for an extension. There is also a possibility that after the three-month period, upon mutual agreement, writer-editors will be eligible to join the Hell Gate cooperative, with an ownership stake in Hell Gate and a voice in its governance.
—The pay range is $4,000 to $5,000/month, depending on experience. Hell Gate will also cover up to $500 of monthly healthcare premiums.
—Candidates must live in New York City. Remote work is encouraged (though you can choose to work out of our East Village office that’s also an abandoned bank).
—Women, people of color, people with disabilities, and LGBT candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
—We’re looking to fill these positions by early January 2023, with a mid- to end of January start date, so apply soon!
