Reporter/Blogger

OnEarth magazine is seeking talented writers to provide a mix of newsy, insightful blog posts and powerful enterprise reporting for its award-winning website, OnEarth.org. We’re looking for journalists with a wide range of skills who can delve deeply into environmental issues -- and also connect them with the wider realms of food, health, culture, sports, business, entertainment, religion, and politics. We want contributors with proven reporting chops, distinctive voices, and, when appropriate, strong, well-reasoned points of view. You should be able to crowdsource a story through social media but also practice the ancient art of picking up the phone and demanding answers.

Requirements:

--At least 3-5 years of reporting and writing experience
--Proven ability to cover a beat, investigate stories, and break news
--Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple assignments
--Creative thinking and successful track record taking unusual, unexpected approaches
--Adept at both long-form storytelling and producing short off-the-news items
--Experience with blogging software, social media, and other tools for digital journalism
--Comfortable working remotely and independently but also functioning as part of a team
--Willingness to work on assigned issues and topics as well as ability to generate own ideas and leads
--Flexibility to travel regionally for reporting
--No qualms about self-promotion and generating attention for your work

Applicants can be from anywhere in the United States, although we’re particularly interested in Midwest and Western voices. We’re looking for correspondents who can contribute 2-3 short news items per week while also producing approximately one in-depth feature, profile, think piece, or investigative story each month. Our most important goal is that these enterprise stories are distinctive and have impact. This is a part-time freelance position paying $2,500 per month.
