Summer Fellow

Bedford + Bowery, a news site produced by NYU Journalism in collaboration with New York magazine, is pleased to offer a summer fellowship for graduate students and recent grads. We're seeking applicants who can start immediately as well as those who can start in June.

As a B+B fellow, you'll be reporting five full days per week, from 10am to 6pm, for the "best new local blog" (per L magazine) covering downtown Manhattan and North Brooklyn. The pay is $600/week.

We're seeking reporters who are eager to produce lively, engaging, and timely stories with a focus on the East Village, LES, Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Bushwick (though you needn't necessarily be constrained to those neighborhoods). Applicants will ideally be savvy about the neighborhoods listed above or at the very least eager to explore them to the hilt, with an eye for news minutia as well as larger stories in the areas of education, politics, crime, housing and real estate, arts and culture, and business openings and closings, to name just some of our areas of coverage. You should be able to cultivate sources and write quickly and accurately, with an engaging, “bloggy” tone and sense of humor when appropriate.

You’ll be on call at 20 Cooper Square to report stories as assigned by the site's editor. Since you’ll also be encouraged to pitch stories and even come up with ideas for regular columns during editorial meetings, creative thinking and a familiarity with the blogosphere is a plus. We’re looking for someone who is proactive, eager to share ideas, and has a sense of fun. But above all, the site strives to be the first to report neighborhood news in a competitive environment; you should be able to thrive under tight deadlines and turn around copy that meets the standards of New York magazine, editors of which work closely with the site in case a story warrants pick-up across other New York magazine blogs or in the magazine. They also are looking closely at B+B's daily file for emerging talent. You should expect to write at least one story per day, and be able to work on longer features while also producing shorter items.

Features Intern

Woman's Day is searching for enthusiastic summer interns to join its features department. We are looking for students working toward a degree in journalism or English, who are interested in women's lifestyle magazines. Ideal candidates will be organized, creative, self-motivated and passionate about the magazine. Interns will work closely with our features team to research and brainstorm ideas for articles on books, personal finance, pets, women entrepreneurs and women making differences in their communities. Interns will also have the chance to attend weekly production meetings and pitch meetings. Previous relevant internship experience is preferred, but not required.

Editorial Intern

offMetro.com, an award-winning online green travel resource covering car-free getaways from New York and San Francisco, is seeking part-time editorial interns to start in its offMetro NY offices immediately.

offMetro is expanding quickly, and is in the process of being acquired by one of the largest newspaper publishers in the world. The ideal candidate must have 1-2 years of writing experience in the online media and/or print publishing field.

A love of travel and ability to meet tight deadlines is essential. Interns may be asked to go on press trips—be it in the outer boroughs, upstate New York, or throughout the northeast—and deliver a story upon return. (It is not uncommon for editorial interns to travel internationally as well.) Interns will be expected to submit 1-2 short posts per week. Candidates with social media and photography skills will be given special consideration.

In addition to the travel perks, oM is a great place to grow your portfolio, refine your travel writing voice, and have your byline appear in several media outlets, including offMetro SF and its upcoming daily print section, as well its columns in the Huffington Post and Budget Travel. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from seasoned journalists who've worked at such publications as the New Yorker, Los Angeles Magazine, Bicycling Magazine, Marie Claire, and the New York Times.

This internship is unpaid, but can lead to freelance positions.

We are looking for:
*Strong writing ability
*Experience in online media or print publishing
*Ability to work independently and on deadline
*Photography skills
*Social Media savvy
