Spring 2014 Editorial Internships with The Nation magazine and The Nation Institute

For more than three decades The Nation Institute, in conjunction with The Nation magazine, has provided an internship program for early-career journalists interested in journalism and publishing.

Our internship program offers three internship sessions a year, with eleven internship positions available during each session:

Seven editorial interns experience a comprehensive immersion into The Nation and TheNation.com's editorial processes. These interns' primary responsibilities include fact-checking for the magazine and website, providing research support to Nation writers and editors, and assisting bloggers on TheNation.com. Interns are not expected to arrive with fact-checking or digital media experience and will be extensively trained in those areas, though a familiarity with The Nation and the range of issues we cover is essential. These interns are based in the magazine's New York City offices.

Toward the end of each internship session, one exemplary intern will be asked to stay on for an additional session as a digital intern in order to deepen his or her engagement with The Nation and TheNation.com's editorial processes and build on skills learned during the editorial internship.

One additional editorial internship position is available in The Nation's Washington D.C. office. This intern works closely with the magazine's Washington reporters, researching and fact-checking, as well as attending press conferences and Congressional hearings.

We also offer two internship positions at the non-profit Nation Institute. One intern works primarily with the Institute's progressive book imprint, Nation Books, reviewing book proposals, fact-checking, and conducting research, as well as assisting with social media and blogging. Another intern works with the Institute's Investigative Fund, fact-checking and conducting research, as well as assisting with outreach. Both of these interns also work on Institute-related projects and will be based at the Institute's New York City offices.

Candidates should indicate which internship position—The Nation in New York or D.C., or The Nation Institute—they would like to be considered for in their cover letter, or indicate that they would like to be considered for multiple positions.

All interns have the opportunity to write for TheNation.com and participate in educational seminars with journalists, academics, and activists.

The internship is full time, five days a week. The Spring 2014 session begins January 7 and ends June 6, and the postmark deadline for applications is October 7, 2013.

Compensation and credit: Interns are paid an hourly wage and provided an Unlimited Metrocard or equivalent reimbursement for interns who take other modes of transportation. Whenever possible, The Nation Institute will assist interns in arranging for academic or work-study credit. Housing and travel grants are available to those who need them in order to do the internship.

Qualifications: Applicants must have completed their junior year of college.

Editorial Intern, Modern Painters and Art+Auction

Louise Blouin Media, publisher of Art+Auction and Modern Painters magazines, is seeking editorial interns for the fall term.

Duties will include research, fact-checking, transcribing interviews, updating the editorial calendar, as well as some administrative work. As part of a tight-knit team, interns will have opportunities to report and write, and will gain insight into both the art world and the process of editing and publishing a monthly magazine. Interns will work with both magazines.

An interest in the visual arts, the art market, and/or contemporary culture is important. So are good writing and communications skills, and attention to detail. Ideally, candidates will currently be enrolled in an undergraduate program, though recent graduates are welcome to apply as well.

Internships require a commitment of two days a week for a minimum of three months and may be done in exchange for academic credit, though receiving school credit is not mandatory. We offer a daily stipend to cover lunch and travel.

Editorial Intern

We need interns to come in at least 2 days a week to our office in Chelsea (it doesn't necessarily have to be two full 8-hour days) and work on a variety of tasks including compiling event listings, writing news briefs, doing man-on-the-street interviews, taking photos, and writing features/profiles/news articles. Lots of opportunities for bylines!
