ABOUT THE POSITION:
Radiolab seeks a communications and production manager to join a tremendously creative staff that serves a passionate, diverse audience and produces an unparalleled product.

Reporting to the senior producer of Radiolab, the communications and production manager will be a vital part of the Radiolab management team. The communications and production manger must have an ability to keep many balls in the air at once, and balance a complex workload. An ability to communicate with a range of audiences (listeners, stations, press, funders, new audiences, etc.) in a manner that is not only clear but conveys creativity and passion for Radiolab which ignites interest is essential. Attention to detail and thoroughness is a must, as this position will play an essential role in the technical distribution of the content. This position also plays a critical role in the editorial process, leading the front-end research, acting as a content ambassador and liaison with science advisors and contributors, and performing final fact checking editorial functions. The successful candidate will be a formidable project manager, an excellent writer with a keen understanding of the Radiolab voice, an excellent researcher who demonstrates fearlessness in pursuit of information. As a critical lynchpin in the Radiolab editorial team, this person must earn the editorial trust of the hosts and senior producer. The ability to work in a tightly-knit team and to indentify and prioritize the day- to-day operational support required to meet the program’s longer term audience goals are required. The position involves extensive communication with other staff members, and possibly staff supervision, as needed to back up the Senior Producer.

We anticipate that this position is 30% external/audience communications, 30% distribution/logistics and production management/analysis, 30% editorial work and 10% administration.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
 Establishing and driving the strategic plan for online content, and working with the Radiolab production team to execute and evaluate this plan
 Acting as editor (assigning and overseeing other Radiolab staff and interns) and writer for audience communication tools, such as newsletter, facebook, twitter
 Conduct periodic analysis of performance of online efforts, developing tools and metrics to manage not only the production of content but the engagement of the audience
 Writing compelling detailed copy to support fundraising efforts, including but not limited to broadcast fundraising campaigns (local and national), direct-to-listener support appeals (in podcast, newsletter, and on website and social media), and working with the development department on grant proposals and reports
 Keep in close contact with show contributors and advisors to solicit stories, vet stories ideas/information
 Conduct story research at the front end of the production process
 Perform fact-check and QA on the final drafts of show content
 Execute/manage show distribution process, overseeing interns and production assistants to upload, deliver and archive content
 From time to time, produce stories or assist in production as needed (which can include field recording, booking guests and arranging logistics such as tape syncs)
 Assist the editor in show-related activities to meet deadlines
 Live event promotion and logistics management
 Comply with New York Public Radio and show policies and guidelines
 This position requires use of a computer, telephone and other office equipment; ability to communicate effectively through a variety of methods; requires ability to work extended hours/overtime as needed, including some evenings and weekends
 Must be able to work remotely on occasion
 Work on other special projects and other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

 Three years journalism, print and/or broadcast experience required
 Project management experience required
 Demonstrated ability to manage and form teams, or oversee the quality of output from a group
 Ability to prioritize and handle several projects at once required
 Sound organizational skills, with great attention to detail required
 Staff supervision, particularly in an editorial context, experience suggested
 Experience working with sound recordings; musical and digital audio editing experience preferred
 Previous radio production experience required
 Ability to meet objectives under deadline pressure required
 Requires ability to work in a group environment, and to take direction well
 Requires the intellectual and emotional depth, maturity, self-confidence and interpersonal skills to work effectively and/or interact with other programming staff, executives at New York Public Radio, colleagues, sources and guests

MORNING NEWS ASSISTANT PRODUCER, WQXR

About the position:
Ambitious, multimedia public radio newsroom seeks engaging, intellectually curious self-starter with strong communication skills and high energy to help us make a dynamic radio and online experience for news consumers nationwide. Must be open to creative thinking, a team effort and making something new daily. The Assistant Producer coordinates and manages distributed on-air and online news coverage, assists in the creation of hourly newscasts, and prepares multimedia news material for immediate and future posting on the web and in various media drawing from WQXR and WNYC’s primary sources, reporters, partners, and through original reporting and research.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Monitor and update online and on-air news content, using local, national and international resources, for WQXR and WNYC.
• Write and edit news stories and headlines for distribution online and on air, focusing on story selection, accuracy and word-craft
• Work together with hosts to compose and edit hourly newscasts
• Report stories from the newsroom using primary sources, but also telephone, internet and other sources -- sometimes on short deadlines
• Receive reports filed remotely by others, and prepare them for distribution online and on air
• Maintain a solid knowledge of international, domestic, New York State, New Jersey, and New York City news.
• Contribute ideas for additional distribution possibilities, story-production ideas and directions, particularly to augment the ideas of reporters and producers not as familiar with current possibilities online and in other media
• Keep current with the latest web technologies, production tools, distribution trends, and other innovations.
• Comply with New York Public Radio and show policies and guidelines
• This position requires use of a computer, telephone and other office and/or broadcast equipment; ability to communicate effectively through a variety of methods
• Ability to work extended hours as needed

Qualifications:

• Two-Three years of solid news journalism experience required
• Two years production, writing and/or reporting experience in daily news required
• Bachelors Degree required
• Demonstrated excellence writing news for the eye and for the ear required
• Demonstrated skill writing and managing web content required
• Solid, demonstrated news judgment required
• Knowledge of current and past news and issues affecting the NY-NJ region, nationally and internationally a must
• Knowledge of Public Radio - style media, tone and journalism preferred
• Must be able to work under newsroom pressure and on tight broadcast deadlines, and be a clear thinker during stressful breaking-news situations
• Must be a quick-thinking, resourceful problem-solver who is adept at finding answers quickly
• Requires advanced skill editing audio, and basic skill editing digital images and video
• Experience using Django-based content management tools a plus
• Strong familiarity with common social media services a plus

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between NYPR and AFTRA. The minimum salary is $40,903.
