This is an entry-level, full time position that is ideal for recent graduates and those early on in their career looking to learn. the ins and outs of an independent magazine. It encompasses a combination of administrative and creative responsibilities, both aiding and participating in the editorial process.

General responsibilities and requirements include:

Being available five days a week and weekends when needed with advance notice given.
Being available in office five days a week from 9 AM until 6 PM unless otherwise stated or agreed upon.
Opening the office and closing the office located in Downtown New York and executing office operations.
Managing Editor-in-Chief’s day-to-day calendar.
Coordinating team meetings and communications and keep notes for important meetings.

Researching themes, projects, topics, etc.

Editor and Publisher

Job Opening for an Editor and Publisher of two long-established weekly newspapers in the Lower Hudson Valley: the Putnam County Courier and the Putnam County News and Recorder. Experience preferred but not necessary – we will get you up to speed on the unfamiliar parts of the job.

The Editor and Publisher will work with a small staff, including part-timers, volunteers and freelancers, along with vendors and suppliers, to manage all aspects of the business, including editorial, production, advertising, subscriptions, social media, website, community relations and more. The two papers share many resources, including personnel and editorial content.

The editor can work remotely. Like much of the Lower Hudson Valley, it is a vibrant area culturally, socially and politically, with an engaged, sophisticated, small-town and semi-rural readership amid many lakes, beaches, parks, trails and other outdoor leisure opportunities. Manhattan is 50 miles away by car, and there are several Metro North train connections (typically 60-90min) to the city.

There is no requirement to live in Putnam County, but your own transportation will be necessary for meetings, interviews and reporting events. Pay will start in the mid-five figures, depending on experience, with a year-end bonus based on the papers’ financial performance.

Reporter

We are seeking a talented and driven reporter to lead the creation of a new newsletter, which will initially be published twice a week. The newsletter will be a combination of original reporting and distilling large amounts of information from a wide array of sources. This position will serve as the primary writer for the new newsletter.

This is a contract position for six months and requires 20-30 hours of work per week. Payment will be provided monthly as a flat fee. Hours are flexible. If the new newsletter is successful, the contract can be extended or converted to a full-time position.

Regional Managing Editor

The managing editor sets the editorial vision, provides direction and feedback to direct reports and works to build a strong team culture among the partner stations in the three states. You’ll lead an awesome team of beat reporters covering health equity, criminal justice, economic mobility, environmental justice and sports and culture across the three states. You’ll work with a great pair of editors to set coverage priorities and experiment with new ways of storytelling in an ever changing media landscape.

The managing editor also serves as the lead brand ambassador for the newsroom — recruiting and developing talent and elevating the awareness about the regional newsroom within and beyond the collaboration.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the largest news organization serving western Pennsylvania, is seeking an ambitious data reporter who will help lead stories for the PG's investigations team, overseeing the collection and analysis of data for some of the newspaper’s most important work.
