Editor

You will be our first editor and help build the editorial side of our venture. Our ideal candidate has skills in journalism but does not look for the traditional job as a journalist. Instead there will be a lot of room for creativity and experimentation as we're looking for radically new ways in how people consume news. You will write and research but also create new formats and curate articles. If you think a lot about the future of the industry and want to explore new territories, please get in touch with us!

The position will ideally start in April 2021. Pay is $15/hour, with a minimum of 20 hours of work guaranteed each month, although it is likely to be higher, especially at the outset.

We welcome creative, confident and concise writers who can communicate complex ideas to our audience. Not every article will be 700-900 words long; sometimes charts and graphs do a better job at telling the story.

What struggles are schools, students and educators facing during the pandemic?
What’s really working? What’s not?
Who is not being served by current models?

In this job you will:

Report and write about 4-6 articles per month (both news and features).
Pitch new stories and tackle assignments from editors.
Develop and maintain networks of sources from across education.
Rock deadlines.
Participate in story and team meetings via Zoom.
Contribute to overall EdSurge editorial efforts, helping edit staff stories and general contributors on occasion.

A passion for education and learning—and curiosity about how both are changing.
Outstanding writing and editing chops.
Ability to work independently under deadlines with minimal guidance.
Strong interpersonal communication skills.
Experience with different social media platforms.
Broad understanding of major education issues.
Bonus: Familiarity with image editing, content management systems and data visualization tools.

Health/Science editor

Looking for an experienced (3+ years) science/health editor to work with a range of small custom publications. Some are focused towards health care professionals and feature award-winning science journalism. Others have more of a consumer health focus. Experience with journal-level literature and beat reporting a plus, as are multi-media chops (AR, video, podcasting). Some writing involved, clips welcomed. Work environment is collaborative and location is flexible. Half time to start but options to increase hours.

Web Editor

Yale Environment 360, an award-winning online magazine, is seeking a Web Editor to oversee the day-to-day operations of the website. The Web Editor’s responsibilities include preparing articles for publication (finding images, copyediting, and layout); writing short news items; handling all social media; and serving as general operations manager. A good sense of design and knowledge of HTML, CSS, Photoshop, and social media are essential, along with excellent writing skills and a strong interest in and knowledge of environmental issues.

Immigration Data Reporter

Documented is seeking a reporter to help us tell immigration stories through data.

Immigration is a data-heavy beat. Federal agencies like the Justice Department, ICE and USCIS publish data sets that are fertile ground for stories. There are also immigration stories to be found in Department of Labor data, Census Bureau data and many other sources. We want a reporter who knows how to find these data sets, how to discover stories in the numbers, and who has the skills to report them out and put a human touch to the numbers.

Some of the data sets we work with are relatively small and can fit in a single spreadsheet. Others are massive and sprawling and spill over to multiple files and tables. We need the data reporter to be able to handle both. Knowledge of Python, R or SQL is essential as is Excel. Knowledge of the immigration system is not needed, but it is helpful. Most important is a willingness to learn and enthusiasm for the subject.

Documented is a small but growing team looking for someone who can help us think bigger about how to use data and how to use it to reach different audiences. Our reporting is both for and about immigrants and we have a growing body of work in Spanish that is dedicated to providing valuable information to undocumented New Yorkers. In the coming year, we will begin regularly publishing in Chinese as well. We want our data stories to appeal to those audiences as well as immigration lawyers and other professionals working in the field.

We will expect you to contribute news stories regularly while assisting on special projects. We want a teammate who is not afraid to give us feedback, make their voice heard and whom we would learn from as well. While we use data in our stories regularly, our team does not contain anyone with data expertise, so we are eager to learn from this person as much as they will learn from us. This also means this person will have to be able to complete projects with little oversight. This is also an opportunity to help develop a program for future reporters and editors.

Responsibilities include:

Expectation to publish news stories regularly. Should be able to balance long term projects with quick turnaround news stories.
Creating a data library of all the datasets they can find related to immigration and immigrants
Weekly analysis of immigration court data to find stories and trends
Collaborating with reporters on investigative and news stories
Building and maintaining databases
