Senior Tech Reporter

Observer is looking for an ambitious, experienced, and deeply curious reporter to cover the ever-expanding world of big and emerging tech, the power players within it, and its overlap with media, business, and the way we live.

The ideal candidate will have experience responding to the daily demands of a rapidly-changing news cycle, with the ability to turn sharp, clean, engaging copy under considerable time pressure. We’re not looking to review the new iPhone or Alexa, but we are definitely concerned about how much they’re eavesdropping on us.

Responsibilities:
-Publish 2+ stories every day, finding the right balance between quick news hits with an angle and at least one mid-length reported feature per week, along with bigger long-term projects.
-Write with restrained flair, a knowing wink, and an eye skeptical of how technology is affecting our world and our lives                                      -Leverage inside sources to break news whenever possible
-Secure interviews with the major players and the people behind the people who are driving decision-making, growth and innovation at the biggest and most influential companies in technology, including Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Twitter and Uber.
-Always have an eye towards who’s going to shake things up next

Requirements:
-3-5 years reporting experience, ideally in the tech/media space
-Significant time spent in hard news settings, but also the ability to write with voice and style
-Understands the difference between deeply informed commentary and hot takes
-Have something to say
-Advanced grasp of story architecture, for pieces big and small
-Legitimately loves leveraging audience data to help inform editorial decisions, but also understands its limitations and dangers
-Be extremely not-boring

Digital Editor

This position involves writing breaking news, working with the editor-in-chief to support editing, strategizing on the best positioning of stories on the website, and overseeing Gay City News’ social media channels and e-newsletter products.
Ideal candidate will have strong social media and writing skills, have a passion for and understanding of the LGBTQ community and the critical issues affecting it, understand what makes a great story and show discerning judgment about credible sourcing, be proficient in WordPress and able to multitask on deadline, and be a self-starter confident in making appropriate time-sensitive decisions.

Web Producer

WEB PRODUCER – JSTOR DAILY

The Web producer will work with the editors of JSTOR Daily (daily.jstor.org)—a news and culture website published by JSTOR—to keep production schedules on track and publish well-edited, SEO-optimized content on a fast-paced schedule.
Specific Objectives and Responsibilities

Publishing production process (30%)
• Traffics content through manuscript, fact-check, copyedit & publish
• Prepares posts for publication using WordPress
• Adds SEO metadata, checking for keyword frequency on Google webmaster tools
• Tags all content in WordPress and maintains tag schema for full site
• Proofreads content entered into WordPress by other editors
• Chooses pull quotes & adds other visual page elements to package the content for the web
• Helps research JSTOR sources for some posts & adds JSTOR Citation information to others
• Provisions JSTOR sources so they're freely available to JSTOR Daily readers
• Builds author bio pages
Image research and production (25%)
• Researches, acquires & produces visual content for the site
• Makes sure we’re in compliance with copyright laws for images
• Sizes, otherwise edits, and uploads images to WordPress
• Builds slide shows and other visual content
• Tracks image metadata, credits, rights, etc.
• Processes permissions and invoices for images purchased by JSTOR Daily
• Submits receipts for image invoices to marketing manager for expense report
Writing & editing (10%)
• Writes and builds two weekly newsletters

Skills, Experience, and Characteristics
• Minimum 2-3 years of web production experience for an online publication or blog. Experience in a startup environment or on a new publication a plus.
• Familiarity with blogging software (WordPress), social media tools (Hootsuite or SproutSocial), project management tools (Basecamp, JIRA), image research, production & editing skills (Photoshop).
• Detail-oriented, able to multi-task, comfortable in a support role.
• Strong written and oral skills; photo research & production skills. Strong planning and project management skills; ability to meet deadlines; goal-driven.
• An interest in academic research and scholarly publishing and a genuine passion for creating smart content that supports scholarship and education.
• Bachelor’s degree.

Digital Editor

This role is to write breaking news, work with the EIC to support editing, work with staff to position stories best for the website and oversee their use of social, and run social media channels and email newsletters.

Ideal candidate will have strong social media skills, be proficient in WordPress, have a passion for local news, understand what makes a great story and be able to multitask on deadline.

News Assistant (two openings)

The News Assistant program is designed to give recent college graduates practical experience in a broadcast news setting. During their tenure, News Assistants are exposed to many aspects of producing a nightly television news program. Over the course of the program, the News Assistant may have the opportunity to rotate through any or all of the areas of field shoots, research, logging, newsdesk, and online. The approximate term for this position is nine months.

This position will serve as producer of the GGSC’s popular and acclaimed new podcast, The Science of Happiness, which is co-produced and distributed by Public Radio International (PRI), in partnership with Ben Manilla Productions.

Hosted by GGSC founding director Dacher Keltner, a professor of psychology at UC Berkeley, The Science of Happiness offers research-tested strategies for a happier, more meaningful life. In its first season, it earned more than 3 million downloads and hit #2 on iTunes’ list of Top Podcasts, with guests including best-selling authors Michael Pollan and Kelly Corrigan, On Being host Krista Tippett, children’s book author Yuyi Morales, and Dan Harris of ABC News.

This is a six-month, full-time contract position—starting in November of 2018—that could develop into a permanent position.

Responsibilities:
As producer, you’ll be responsible for creating engaging audio content through a mix of science reporting and storytelling. Shepherding each episode through its development, production, and distribution, your duties will include:

-Researching episode ideas and Identifying and pre-interviewing guests
-Writing and editing scripts
-Maintaining comprehensive production schedule
-Production coordination—booking studio time, lining up interviews and coordinating with the host’s schedule
-Overseeing the in-studio recording, and the post-production, of each episode, working with a sound designer
-Working with freelancers on tape syncs and other content collection from the field
-Occasionally interviewing guests yourself for the show’s science segment
-Identifying and securing additional creative partners when appropriate (e.g., collaborations with other podcasts, working with an artist on an illustration for each episode)
-Posting the final audio and show descriptions to the podcast hosting platform and the GGSC website
-Working with PRI and the GGSC’s marketing director to support marketing and promotion

Qualifications:
-2+ years experience in writing for and producing long-form audio or video, preferably podcasts
-Strong reporting skills: experience researching subjects, prepping for and conducting interviews
-Audio production skills: experience recording and editing audio
-Expert storytelling skills: ability to craft a narrative from a longer interview and identify its most compelling moments
-Strong project management and problem solving skills: ability to juggle various tasks, coordinate schedules, and meet deadlines
-Reel or portfolio, with a description of your role in each piece
-Knowledge of best practices and innovations in podcast production preferred
