Paid Journalism Internship in Washington, D.C. - Spring 2019

The National Journalism Center combines 12 weeks of on-the-job training at a Washington, D.C.-based media outlet and once-weekly training seminars led by prominent journalists, policy experts, and NJC faculty.

The program matches interns with print, broadcast, or online media outlets based on their interests and experience. Interns spend an average of 35-40 hours per week gaining practical, hands-on journalism experience. Potential placements include the Washington Times, the Washington Examiner, C-SPAN, Fox News, and more.

Students will attend the NJC seminar one day a week, sharpening their writing and reporting skills and gaining a better understanding of media, society, and public policy, and the intersection between the three in Washington, D.C. and nationwide.

Editorial Intern

The Points Guy is looking for a fall editorial intern to join our newsroom. Editorial interns will monitor travel industry news, research various topics, attend daily edit meetings and write news posts for ThePointsGuy.com. Ability to work on tight deadlines with clean copy is required. We’re looking for interns for the paid ($20/hour), 20-40 hours per week (flexible) commitment.

Editorial Internship

Rachael Ray Every Day magazine (RachaelRayMag.com) is seeking a part-time editorial intern for the Fall 2018 semester. We’re looking for a hard-working, organized, digitally-savvy intern with an interest in food and lifestyle content who wants to learn how a magazine operates from the ground up. Candidates should be strong writers studying journalism, communications, English, or another related field.

The intern will:
• Pitch and write stories for RachaelRayMag.com, including original food and lifestyle news stories, recipe roundups, shopping stories, and more
• Assist the Lifestyle Editor with various tasks such as calling in product, tracking samples and credit sheets, and attending press events
• Assist the Editorial Assistant with admin tasks such as cataloguing new food products for the Checkout column

Fall Opinion Intern

This is a paid part-time internship in Manhattan.

The opinion intern will be responsible for assisting the Opinion Editor and Deputy Opinion Editor in preparing pieces for online publication and recruiting writers for the Forward's contributor network, Scribe. The intern will also be able to contribute their own writing to the Forward's opinion section.

Fall 2018 Editorial Intern

Junior Scholastic is looking for an editorial intern for Fall 2018! Applicants should have strong written and verbal communication skills and an interest in current events, journalism, education, and/or writing for teenage readers.

Responsibilities:
• Assisting senior editors with feature production: researching, transcribing interviews, fact-checking, and proofreading stories
• Pitching, reporting, and writing news shorts
• Preparing teaching resources that accompany each issue
• Posting content on juniorcholastic.com
• Promoting Junior Scholastic on social media
• Communicating with subscribers and teacher-advisers
• Some administrative tasks

Qualifications:
• Pursuing or recently received a degree in journalism, English, or a related field
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Passion and knowledge about current events and/or education
• Proficient with social media

Hours:
10am-6pm, Monday-Friday (full- and part-time positions available) in our Soho offices

Food Intern

PEOPLE magazine is looking for a food intern to work closely with its food and lifestyle editors. The ideal intern is a resourceful, independent person who jumps right in and becomes part of the staff—an aspiring food writer with a passion for and at least some expertise in the culinary industry.
The intern will report and quickly write online stories—and fact check and research stories for the weekly magazine, often under intense deadline pressure.
The intern should have worked at a campus publication and/or in a food-related field—and be a creative thinker, a self-starter, professional, resourceful and a team player. Strong writing skills are a must. The intern must also be enthusiastic and see the big picture but pay close attention to detail, too—a thinker and a doer. He/she must also like working in a fast-paced, news-driven environment and feel comfortable using Twitter, Facebook and Instagram as reporting tools.
Because of the nature of news, some late evening and weekend work may be required on “closing” days. This is a full-time internship opportunity open to recent grads.

Fall Social TV Intern

What does our department do?
Social TV runs the social and digital strategy for all CNN programs, anchors, special events and breaking news coverage. Part of CNN Digital's Social Team, the Social TV producers identify the most newsworthy moments from CNN air and turn it into compelling digital and social content. The team also works closely with show teams finding creative ways to integrate social into the broadcast and develops and executes strategies around special CNN events and programming.

What will you be doing?
Interns will gain insight into the digital strategy for a global news network. They will learn how to turn TV content into engaging social content and will help with writing stories and producing videos for social.
They will also gain experience developing social strategies and using analytics to measure success for social.

What do we need from you?
Candidates should be passionate about news, self-motivated, able to multitask, have a good attitude, and be able to function well in fast paced, high volume environment.

Interns are paid at least minimum wage ($13/hour), can work up to 20 hours/week, and relocation is not provided.

• All international students will be required to provide documentation of proper visa paperwork prior to starting the internship

Editorial Intern

Psychology Today has an excellent opportunity for a few smart and talented editorial interns at our office in New York. We are a small staff, so you’ll be a key member of the team. Interns pitch story ideas and write short articles for the magazine and the website. They typically receive at least one byline each issue. Other duties include working closely with staff on story research and special projects, proofreading print and online copy, helping to manage editorial content on our website, and occasional transcription and light clerical work.

The pay is $9/hour.

Journalism experience and an interest in human behavior required. Background in psychology and/or experience writing science stories not mandatory, but a major plus. Must be able to juggle several tasks at once and work autonomously.

Position runs September through December, 2 days a week.

Editorial Intern

Scholastic News, a weekly magazine that provides current events and nonfiction articles to millions of students in elementary schools across the United States, is seeking an editorial intern to begin working in the fall. The intern would be working on the magazines for grades four, five, and six. The responsibilities include fact-checking, researching and pitching story ideas, writing short articles, and handling other administrative duties.

The ideal candidate is someone who is studying journalism, has experience working for a news website, newspaper, or magazine, and has a knowledge of elementary school curriculum. The internship would run from September to early December. The intern would need to be available to come into the office, located in New York City, two days a week from 10 am to 6 pm.

Culture Intern

The Forward seeks an aspiring journalist to join its culture desk for a paid internship. The culture intern will work 25 hours a week at $13 an hour and must commit to a 10-week program at a minimum. The internship may be renewable, subject to management approval.

Responsibilities
• Pitch, write and report stories on Jewish cultural events and trends for the Forward’s blogs, website, and print edition.
• Work with the Forward’s content management system to post blogs and stories to the internet.
• Assist the culture editor with photo research, fact-checking, and administration.
• Help with proofing of the monthly print magazine.
• Have the opportunity to contribute to the Forward’s news and opinion desks.

Requirements
• A minimum of one year of journalism and writing experience.
• Interest in film, theater, music, art, and literature, particularly of the Jewish variety.
• Ability to work under tight deadlines.
• Team player who works well both collaboratively and autonomously.
• Organizational and time-management skills.
