Paid Journalism Internship in Washington, D.C.

The National Journalism Center combines 12 weeks of on-the-job training at a Washington, D.C.-based media outlet and once-weekly training seminars led by prominent journalists, policy experts, and NJC faculty.

This program is open to students who are doing a study abroad program and recent graduates.

The program matches interns with print, broadcast, or online media outlets based on their interests and experience. Interns spend an average of 30 hours per week gaining practical, hands-on journalism experience. Potential placements include the Washington Times, the Washington Examiner, C-SPAN, Fox News, and more.

Interns will attend the NJC seminar one day a week, sharpening their writing and reporting skills and gaining a better understanding of media, society, and public policy, and the intersection between the three in Washington, D.C. and nationwide.

Internships are offered during both spring and summer. The spring dates for 2018 are January 22 through April 13, and applications are due by November 26.

Fall 2017 Editorial Intern

Interns are an important part of Salon’s daily editorial operations. They work closely with Salon staff to research, report, write and produce our news and culture coverage. They also learn about the day-to-day workings of an award-winning online news and entertainment site. Many Salon interns have gone on to jobs in the media, including Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Elle, CNN and, of course, Salon.

Salon offers paid internships throughout the year in our New York offices.

We require a time commitment of at least 20 hours per week, over at least 3 days. It is possible to do the internship for college credit. Some professional experience is required.

Freelance Writer/Internship

We are looking for interns or freelance writers for any topics. (See www.agebrilliantly.org for topics)

For interns:
-We expect 15-20 hours per week in fall/spring.

- You will be doing a lot of research and writing. Do not apply if this is something you do not enjoy.

-write 500-700 word articles for our site

-assist with social media (basic graphic design skills)

For freelance writers:
-You will come in to the office for a couple of weeks to learn the ropes. Must understand what our audience and members are looking for.

-Once you've created a pipeline of topic ideas with the editorial team, they will be reviewed and approved/rejected.
-You will write the articles. If they are approved and published you will be paid.

-We’re based in mid-Manhattan and will allow you to do some of this writing from home.

We accept students from all majors. However, we are looking for journalism students who are passionate about writing and can produce good quality articles quickly for publication.

Tech News Intern

Mashable is seeking an ambitious and tech-savvy undergraduate (juniors and seniors are eligible) or graduate-level Editorial Tech News Intern for Fall 2017 (9/5/17-12/22/17). As an intern focusing on technology news, you'll have the opportunity to work with and learn from Mashable's editorial leadership in the company's New York City headquarters.

Reporting intern

The Strategic Content department is CNBC's only cross-platform team, creating editorial content for on-air and online (CNBC.com) publication. Our department produces a packed editorial calendar of special reports covering core CNBC topics: investing, technology, entrepreneurship and more. We also produce several of CNBC's biggest annual editorial brands, including the CNBC Disruptor 50 list and CNBC's Top States for Business.

Students must be currently enrolled. Recent graduates are not eligible.

A Strategic Content internship provides students with the opportunity to write for the web and learn about producing for TV. Our team mentors include digital editors, television producers and those focused on business development/news partnerships.

Internships with our team have historically focused on writing articles for CNBC.com, offering interns a portfolio of clips to further their journalism career goals. We're looking for candidates eager to prove they have what it takes to become a reporter in a highly competitive, fast-moving news business — motivated, confident students who will pitch story ideas and see those ideas through to publication in a variety of formats, including quick turnaround pieces on the news of the day, features and research-based articles. We will also gear internships to television production or business development for the right candidate. All interns have the opportunity to contribute cross-platform.

Journalism experience is preferred, but candidates with a background in business/finance and a passion for writing and producing are encouraged to apply.

The Fall Internship Program runs from August 28 to December 22, 2017.
Interns will be assigned to work within a division on the National Public Affairs Team (Philanthropy and Cultural Activism, National Issue Advocacy, or Labor and Economy), but may collaborate with other divisions and teams as needed. Interns will be asked to focus on a range of projects, including longer-term and day-to-day/immediate tasks assigned by their team.
NATIONAL PUBLIC AFFAIRS: Focuses on national and local issues and campaigns around the country. Science and Social Media News Assistant

The Science & Social Media News Assistant program is designed to give recent college graduates practical science reporting experience in a digital newsroom setting. For this position, we’re looking for creative thinkers with visionary ideas on how to tell science stories using traditional and social media platforms. During their tenure, News Assistants will write at least one science story per week for the NewsHour website, while producing science-based multimedia content for the NewsHour's social media pages. Duties include pitching ideas, assisting in story research and development and reporting original content. Multimedia products may include social videos, gifs, Snap and Instagram stories and more.

Qualified applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree, strong work ethic, effective time management and excellent writing and research skills. Also, they should be familiar with a range of social media platforms, interest in online and/or science journalism and an interest in telling stories using design and graphics. Graphic design, motion graphics, animation or video editing experience, and training in physical, biological or computer sciences a plus.

AlterNet Intern (Paid), Session II

AlterNet, a leader of independent news and information on a wide range of progressive topics, is now accepting applications for general interns. AlterNet internships may be full-time or part-time, depending on your stated interest. Our mission is to help students, as well as college and university graduates early in their careers, gain entry-level skills and experience in a fast-paced digital news environment, with interest in text- and video-based content.

Requirements: Qualified candidates must have:
• A background in newswriting/nonfiction essay writing and/or video creation and editing
• A burning interest in social justice & progressive issues that AlterNet covers: activism, race, sexuality and gender, the environment, civil liberties, economic and world affairs

Roles: Based on your interest, and our needs, your internship will combine a mix of these activities:

Summer 2017, Session II:

AlterNet internships  are based in our New York City office. Internships are offered on a rolling basis—please specify in your application when you would like to participate (i.e., the dates you can begin and end an 8-week-or-more period, and if you wish to state a preference for full-time or part-time).

Compensation and Credit: AlterNet will assist interns in arranging for academic or work-study credit, if needed. We offer a stipend of $400/week for full-time interns (or $12/hour for part-time interns).

Editorial Intern

Scholastic News, a weekly magazine that provides current events and nonfiction articles to millions of students in elementary schools across the United States, is seeking an editorial intern to begin working in the fall. The intern would be working on the magazines for grades four, five, and six. The responsibilities include fact-checking, researching and pitching story ideas, writing short articles, and handling other administrative duties.

The ideal candidate is someone who is studying journalism, has experience working for a news website, newspaper, or magazine, and has a knowledge of elementary school curriculum. The internship would run from September to early December. The intern would need to be available to come into the office, located in New York City, two days a week from 10 am to 6 pm.

 

Editorial Intern (Summer/Fall 2017)

Author Philip Pullman once wrote, “After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.” At Artsy, we wholeheartedly agree.

Within our mission to make art accessible to anyone with an internet connection, we tell the stories around art and artmaking, with the end goal of creating exciting, engaging, and educational content and dialogue around the art world. With that in mind, we are looking for self-motivated individuals to help us achieve this goal.

The successful intern will play an integral part in Artsy Editorial’s growth and our goal to produce content that pushes the conversation around art forward.

Our desired candidate will have a background in journalism, experience working at an arts or culture publication, and/or a background in art history. You are enthusiastic about online publishing, spend most of your time thinking about the possibilities of the written word online, and feel very comfortable undertaking extensive independent research and fact-checking tasks. Additionally, you should have an expressed interest in contemporary art and art history with a strong desire to learn more.

Lastly, you are a strategic thinker, a proactive problem-solver, a confident and thoughtful writer, and a strong collaborator who is excited be part of a dynamic, close-knit editorial team, and you get a thrill out of working in a fast-paced environment.

For the Summer/Fall period, we are looking for interns in three distinct focus areas:

Creative and Visuals

This role will focus primarily on image research and securing visual assets for our content. We are looking for someone with a strong eye for images and a passion for finding the best options to illustrate a story. The ideal candidate is extremely organized, undaunted by handling multiple projects and moving pieces at the same time, and an expert in Photoshop.

In this role, you’ll work primarily with our Features Producer as well as in collaboration with various writers and editors to ensure that their stories are paired with the most compelling visuals. In addition, you will also contribute to diligently fact-checking articles and be given the opportunity to write when appropriate.

Operations

We are also looking for an intern who wants to see the big picture. The ideal candidate is curious about how all the pieces fit at an online publisher, obsessed with efficiency, and passionate about developing streamlined and scalable processes. He or she should be the epitome of organization, work extremely well with others (especially under pressure), and be the definition of a team player. You will be in the middle of operations, picking up fact-checking duties, research, as well as copy editing and writing when appropriate.

An intern in this role will need strong copy editing skills and a keen understanding of both AP and Chicago styles. You will also be a meticulous fact-checker and a clean, efficient writer when called upon.

Content

This role will have an equal focus on journalistic writing and fact checking. The ideal candidate is a nimble and confident writer who excels at communicating clearly and concisely. She or he has experience writing in a journalistic capacity, is obsessed with meeting deadlines, and is excited about working in a fast paced online publishing environment.

You will also be comfortable handling long-term and large-scale research projects, as well as have thorough due diligence when it comes to fact-checking. We are looking for someone who knows how to confirm the veracity of both their own reporting and the reporting of others with thoroughness and speed.
