Media Organization: Forum on Law, Culture & Society

Company Description

The Forum on Law, Culture & Society at Fordham Law School is a public humanities program that invites you to satisfy your intellectual curiosity on matters of law, justice, and civil society in a dynamic and engaging town hall setting. The Forum brings together influential artists and leading public figures in conversation with you—the audience—to explore ideas about law and justice, and how the two are integrated into the broader culture.

The Forum allows you to connect, discuss, and—most of all—think about the way legal matters affect society and influence the artistic imagination. The Forum is open to everyone, and is intended to be enjoyed by all those who appreciate art, culture and ideas. So join our Forum community. Come to our events. Watch highlights of our programs. Read or comment on our blog. And become part of something that is important and smart.

The Forum Film Festival is an annual event that screens six law-related films followed by conversations with artists, writers, public intellectuals, and members of the legal profession.

Job Description

We are a public humanities Forum at Fordham Law School with a large audience, and are looking for smart writers to contribute to our blog. If you open our link: http://www.forumonlawcultureandsociety.org/, you will see that we host high profile guests such as Mario Cuomo, Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Sam Waterston for engaging conversations in Lincoln Center. The purpose of the public programs is to enrich the cultural life of New York City however our mission has a much broader audience. We aim to be the leader in providing original content on issues of social consequence and public interest, and we do this through our blog.

Every week the students would be expected to write two formatted blog posts on our key topics and attend weekly strategy meetings with the Forum team and our Web site development team. Recently our bloggers have written about the trials of Dominique Strauss-Kahn and Casey Anthony, as well as Oliver Stone who will be appearing at our annual Film Festival in October. This position requires time dedicated to keeping current with news stories and writing blog entries on topics relevant to the Forum. Depending on the law and culture news stories that arise, the Forum Director Professor Thane Rosenbaum may also write a piece for the New York Times, Huffington Post, Wall Street Journal etc., and we will want to continue the theme on our blog. Other posts would be open for the student to take the lead once they are comfortable with our niche. We would also like them to be available to live blog our fall events (evenings) which include a week long film festival from Oct 14 - 20 and a conversation night at the Time Warner Center in November.

No prior law experience is necessary. We are a public Forum, and our contributors write for the general public. Those who have worked with us have enjoyed the experience while boosting their resume and have a great compilation of essays on an award-winning Web site to show future employers.
