Job Description

The American Public Media business program *Marketplace* seeks a news assistant for its bureau in Shanghai. The candidate must be a citizen of the People’s Republic of China.

The successful candidate does not need experience in journalism—but you will have to think like a journalist. We are looking for a Chinese assistant who speaks excellent English. You are someone who is very good at communicating with people from all walks of life and feels comfortable enough in your own skin so that you can confidently approach potential sources with ease, knowing how to handle yourself in a professional manner.

You’ll need to think creatively and analytically. When you are asked to think of an original angle to a news story, you do not copy what other news outlets have already reported. Instead, you do the hard research, synthesize the information, and come up with a fresh angle and potential sources yourself, and you do so quickly and efficiently. You need to be able to quickly and accurately translate interviews from Chinese to English.

You need to be confident, but not arrogant. Most importantly, you need to be trust-worthy, honest, and someone who thinks of others with compassion.

The work includes transcribing interviews and translating them from Chinese to English, arranging interviews, finding good sources for stories, and doing thorough research to find original, thought-provoking stories. You’ll have to do all of this efficiently and accurately, as we're a fast-paced news organization. The work also includes managing administrative tasks for the bureau.

*Location:* Shanghai. Occasional travel throughout China will be required.
