Journalism Job

Media Organization: Forward

Company Description

The Forward is the national Jewish newspaper, beloved and fearsome since 1897.

Job Description

We are looking for a smart editor with experience in the world of ideas and online opinion to take a leadership position in a small, but legendary, Jewish media outlet.

The Forward’s opinion editor oversees the opinion section of the newspaper and website — the premier forum for conversations about issues in the Jewish world.

From Israeli politics to denominational fights and spiritual explorations, the opinion content should be dynamic and full of tension and voice. The editor’s responsibility is to seek out diverse writers, handle submissions, and edit pieces so that they are compelling and relevant for the Forward’s readers, as well as sourcing shareable and gripping art and illustrations.

In addition to soliciting opeds from new contributors, the editor manages the Forward’s weekly columnists, oversees the roster of monthly columnists and helps shape the editorials written by the Forward’s editorial board and editor-in-chief.

The opinion editor is also in charge of creating and managing reader engagement projects that use the interactivity of the Internet to present ideas and promote conversation — such as The Seesaw, an advice column for interfaith families and a new video project aimed at breaking down the lack of understanding between American Jews and Israelis. The editor must think beyond traditional opeds to more innovative ways of presenting fresh, compelling ideas, from initiating online debates to Q&As and illuminating infographics.

Beyond the responsibilities for the opinion sections, the opinion editor is part of the Forward’s leadership team, involved in decisions about content, managing writers, and editing work for other sections, working to increase the reach and influence of the Forward. The editor is also invited to write for the opinion pages and other sections.

This position is for a journalist attuned to the value of the Forward’s historic and respected brand, who cares passionately about ideas and who is always looking for original ways to engage readers on the issues that matter most to those interested in the contemporary Jewish story.

Qualifications:
At least a Bachelors Degree
3-5 years experience in journalism or similar field
Outstanding writing and editing skills
Experience in team management
Knowledge of the Jewish community a plus.
