Job Description

Nature Publishing Group (NPG) is a publisher of high impact scientific and medical information in print and online. NPG publishes journals, online databases, and services across the life, physical, chemical and applied sciences and clinical medicine.

We are currently looking for a Technology Editor to edit and write features on biomedical technology, software tools and data science, for the audience of researchers and others who read Nature and nature.com. The successful candidate for this role will have several years’ experience writing and editing scientific content and an interest in molecular biology concepts.

The role involves editing and writing Nature’s monthly Technology Features focused on cutting-edge advances in biomedical research, in addition to editing and writing monthly Toolbox features and Q&As and other secondary content on software tools for scientists
We are seeking a candidate familiar with publishing in a digital environment. Curating the Nature Toolbox web page http://www.nature.com/news/toolbox will be a key responsibility.
Working with art and media editor teams to select/develop necessary accompanying graphics and relevant images will be required
The editor will need to stay abreast of technology trends in the biomedical sciences, and software/data trends for researchers, consulting with manuscript editors, members of the Nature magazine team, experts in digital tools at Springer Nature, and beyond

Experience, skills and qualifications:
Strong, demonstrated writing and editing background; a university degree in science or the equivalent preferred
Significant science journalism; demonstrated ability to deftly edit complex scientific material to high journalistic standards in easy-to-understand yet sophisticated terms for non-specialist scientist audiences; ability to work to tight deadlines
Comfort in grasping and clearly articulating complex molecular biology concepts;
An interest in software tools and the challenges faced by working scientists in the pursuit of their careers and navigating their day-to-day jobs
Strong writing and editing skills
Ability to research and generate a regular supply of original feature articles in the subject areas, then commission and effectively work with a roster of freelance writers, bringing their copy to high sheen
High attention to detail and accuracy, strong organizational skills
Ability to work independently, effectively and collegially with others across varied teams
