Web Production Intern

Internship Description:

The Daily Beast is looking for a Web Production Intern to post and edit articles. The Intern will be responsible for receiving final copy of articles and posting them live to the website. They will also look for and fix stylistic/grammatical errors on the site as well as making any changes requested by the editorial or production staff. In addition, the Intern will be responsible for moderating comments on the website.

Requirements:

Our ideal candidate will be tech savvy, have a strong grasp of basic editing and style guidelines (such as AP and MLA) and experience or interest in news and journalism. Current undergrad or recent graduate preferred.

Internship

We're looking for a quick study who can help with editorial and programming tasks, with an emphasis on production and behind-the-scenes functions, including:

* Site updates and daily site maintenance

* Content production, including image cropping, text formatting, and cross promotional linking

* Data collection, management, and generating web statistics reports

* Daily monitoring of news, blogs, and web trends

* Social media assistance

* Assistance with events and marketing

Should be familiar with a combination of subject matters within the Asylum Network, including men's media, humor websites, what's buzzing on the Internet, comic books, science fiction, pop culture, street fashion and trends, as well as best practices of blogging, social media, and viral marketing. A sense of humor will prove to be extremely handy.

Qualifications

* Interest in online media and internet-based businesses.

* Communications, or Journalism preferred

* Superior communications skills, both oral and written

* Well organized, able to multi-task, able to prioritize with minimal direction

* Able to follow up with project partners to ensure accurate and timely completion of deliverables, strong organizational skills

* Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment

Assignment Desk Intern

The Assignment Desk intern will need a flexible schedule and hours.

Some duties for the Assignment Desk intern include handling the phone-in story tips; directing leads; opening and filing mail-in story tips; maintaining daily scheduling logs and monitoring the police radio scanner.

Intern instruction will be from the Assignment Desk Editors on that shift. Occasionally the Intern Coordinator will also instruct and assist the intern.

Work performance will be evaluated by those directly working with the intern and the Intern Coordinator. Evaluation will be given at the end of the internship.

Hours may include:
Monday through Friday -
3:30 AM – 11:30 AM

Reporter Assistant Intern

The Reporter Assistant intern will need a flexible schedule and hours.

Some duties for the Reporter Assistant intern may include answering phone calls and taking messages, making follow-up phone calls and doing preliminary research with the agencies involved on each story idea, handling tape and script requests, looking for file tape, logging tapes, watching news feeds and occasionally help out in the field on a shoot with putting a story together.

Intern instruction will be directly from the Reporter. Occasionally, the Intern Coordinator will also instruct and assist the intern.

Work performance will be evaluated by the Reporter and will be given at the end of the internship.

Hours vary M – F

Qualifications Preferred majors: Broadcasting, Journalism, Communications

To be eligible for this internship, you must be able to receive college credit. This internship is unpaid.

Interactive Intern

The Interactive intern will need a flexible schedule and hours.

The Interactive (Website) Department Intern should be a versatile self-starter, excited about producing news and will cover "beat" and general assignments. Eager to learn and work with a team of experienced professionals, the intern should possess an eye for visual presentation, will produce stories, generate images and video, and provide hyperlinks as needed.

Intern instruction will be from the Interactive Journalists. Occasionally the Intern Coordinator will also instruct and assist the intern.

Work performance will be evaluated by those directly working with the intern and the Intern Coordinator. Evaluation will be given at the end of the internship.

2 – 3 days per week, M-F, hours vary

Qualifications Preferred majors: Journalism-either Broadcast or Print, Communications

To be eligible for this internship, you must be able to receive college credit. This internship is unpaid.

Editorial Intern
