GothamGazette.com Editorial Internships

GothamGazette.com is an online publication about New York City policy and politics. It is published each weekday by the Citizens Union Foundation of the City of New York, a good-government group. Gotham Gazette includes a daily digest of news about New York City, as well as original articles on issues and links and reference information for people interested in New York City. This fall, we will also be launching a new site on money in politics funded by the Knight Foundation. To view the site, go to http://gothamgazette.com/

Gotham Gazette has won a number of other awards, including 2003 and 2009 Online Journalism Awards for general excellence given by the Online News Association and an award from the New York Press Club for its issue-oriented reporting on the Bloomberg administration.

We offer a practical work environment to learn about journalism – particularly online journalism -- policy and politics.

Qualifications
• Writing, editing, research, interviewing and phone skills.
• Basic computer proficiency.
• Interest in New York City politics, policy and civic life.

Editorial interns do a variety of tasks involved in publishing Gotham Gazette and maintaining the website. These include some or all of the following:

• Cover public events and forums, including meetings of the New York City Council and its committees, public policy discussions and speeches
• Write articles
• Research articles and material for the web site, including links and articles archives
• Input data on campaign contributions and the like
• Provide entries for our blog, "The Wonkster"
• Provide research assistance to Gotham Gazette staff
• Update events calendar listings
• Proofread.

During the academic year, interns generally work 16 to 20 hours per week during normal business hours. We would expect you to stay a minimum of three months (or a semester) and can work with your academic institution regarding receiving credit. We do not pay interns.

Online editorial intern

Womenshealthmag.com looking for fall online intern to help with editorial duties, their monthly sweepstakes, product reviews, and more. Must be able to receive credit and work in our midtown offices. Can start anytime. Minimum 2-3 days a week, doesn't have to be full time (we can work with your sched). Thanks!

Online Intern

SLAM Magazine (SLAMonline.com) is in search of an online intern for the coming semester. Among other things, the intern, working closely with online editors, will help manage the website. Tasks will range from editing blog submissions, to corresponding with blog contributors, to helping expand SLAMonline's network of contributors, to working intensely with WordPress and HTML coding.

Requirements: First and foremost, the intern most love basketball and be familiar with SLAM Magazine. In terms of technical skills, proficiency in WordPress, Photoshop, basic HTML and major social media platforms will prove helpful.

Online Editorial Intern

Logo, MTV Networks' TV channel aimed at the LGBT audience (and their friends) needs online editorial interns for the fall 2010 semester to help create written and video content for our websites, which include LogoTV.com, NewNowNext.com (pop culture blog), 365Gay.com (news site) and TripOutGayTravel.com (travel editorial site). An interest in pop culture, and awareness of LGBT culture, news and politics is a big asset. Very strong writing and editorial skills needed. Ability to work quickly, under deadline. Web Production Intern

Internship Description:

The Daily Beast is looking for a Web Production Intern to post and edit articles. The Intern will be responsible for receiving final copy of articles and posting them live to the website. They will also look for and fix stylistic/grammatical errors on the site as well as making any changes requested by the editorial or production staff. In addition, the Intern will be responsible for moderating comments on the website.

Requirements:

Our ideal candidate will be tech savvy, have a strong grasp of basic editing and style guidelines (such as AP and MLA) and experience or interest in news and journalism. Current undergrad or recent graduate preferred.

Internship

We're looking for a quick study who can help with editorial and programming tasks, with an emphasis on production and behind-the-scenes functions, including:

* Site updates and daily site maintenance

* Content production, including image cropping, text formatting, and cross promotional linking

* Data collection, management, and generating web statistics reports

* Daily monitoring of news, blogs, and web trends

* Social media assistance

* Assistance with events and marketing

Should be familiar with a combination of subject matters within the Asylum Network, including men's media, humor websites, what's buzzing on the Internet, comic books, science fiction, pop culture, street fashion and trends, as well as best practices of blogging, social media, and viral marketing. A sense of humor will prove to be extremely handy.

Qualifications

* Interest in online media and internet-based businesses.

* Communications, or Journalism preferred

* Superior communications skills, both oral and written

* Well organized, able to multi-task, able to prioritize with minimal direction

* Able to follow up with project partners to ensure accurate and timely completion of deliverables, strong organizational skills

* Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment

Assignment Desk Intern

The Assignment Desk intern will need a flexible schedule and hours.

Some duties for the Assignment Desk intern include handling the phone-in story tips; directing leads; opening and filing mail-in story tips; maintaining daily scheduling logs and monitoring the police radio scanner.

Intern instruction will be from the Assignment Desk Editors on that shift. Occasionally the Intern Coordinator will also instruct and assist the intern.

Work performance will be evaluated by those directly working with the intern and the Intern Coordinator. Evaluation will be given at the end of the internship.

Hours may include:
Monday through Friday -
3:30 AM – 11:30 AM

Reporter Assistant Intern

The Reporter Assistant intern will need a flexible schedule and hours.

Some duties for the Reporter Assistant intern may include answering phone calls and taking messages, making follow-up phone calls and doing preliminary research with the agencies involved on each story idea, handling tape and script requests, looking for file tape, logging tapes, watching news feeds and occasionally help out in the field on a shoot with putting a story together.

Intern instruction will be directly from the Reporter. Occasionally, the Intern Coordinator will also instruct and assist the intern.

Work performance will be evaluated by the Reporter and will be given at the end of the internship.

Hours vary M – F

Qualifications Preferred majors: Broadcasting, Journalism, Communications

To be eligible for this internship, you must be able to receive college credit. This internship is unpaid.

Interactive Intern

The Interactive intern will need a flexible schedule and hours.

The Interactive (Website) Department Intern should be a versatile self-starter, excited about producing news and will cover "beat" and general assignments. Eager to learn and work with a team of experienced professionals, the intern should possess an eye for visual presentation, will produce stories, generate images and video, and provide hyperlinks as needed.

Intern instruction will be from the Interactive Journalists. Occasionally the Intern Coordinator will also instruct and assist the intern.

Work performance will be evaluated by those directly working with the intern and the Intern Coordinator. Evaluation will be given at the end of the internship.

2 – 3 days per week, M-F, hours vary

Qualifications Preferred majors: Journalism-either Broadcast or Print, Communications

Editorial Intern

BlackBook Media Corp.'s editorial department is looking for motivated and responsible interns for the fall semester to begin immediately.

Our interns get a very well-rounded experience in the world of publishing and get the chance to participate in all facets of BMC.

While the internship is unpaid, we offer many opportunities for our interns to have a tangible impact on BlackBook and really take something away from their experience.
