Audubon is on the hunt for a dynamic, quick-thinking editor to fill an associate or assistant-level editorial position (commensurate with experience) for our flagship magazine, Audubon, and newly launched website, audubon.org. The ideal candidate will have impressive writing and editing chops, the ability to independently manage a front-of-the-book section, and two to five years' experience as a science writer and/or editor. Above all, she or he will be a master at turning stories about the environment and wildlife conservation into must-reads. Knowledge of wildlife and birds is a plus.
Essential Functions:
The Associate Editor manages five key functions of the content department’s editorial efforts:
-Assigns and edits front-of-the-book and Web stories
-Works with assistant editor(s) and interns to develop and edit pieces for print and Web
-Contributes ideas and research to the overall editorial effort
-Conceives and packages special web stories and multi-media projects
-Tracks budgets and performs other logistical support tasks as requested
Qualifications and Experience:
-Bachelor’s degree in Communications, science journalism or related field; Master’s preferred
-2+ years of experience in science journalism and/or editing
-Journalist with experience in writing/editing stories about science and the environment
-An interest in environmental issues, birds, and wildlife
-The ability to pinpoint exciting story ideas that are ideal for Audubon’s audience
-Ability to package daily news content into compelling stories formatted for the Web
-Experience with content management systems
