NBC News and MSNBC are looking for students who are interested in a fast-paced, dynamic environment to participate in one of our many internship opportunities this Spring.
We are looking for students with a variety of different skillsets and backgrounds but who have a strong interest in news and/or politics. Many of our internships are in news writing and production, but we also have multiple positions within news in other functions as well, including digital and long form/documentary programming.
NBC News is one of the largest and longest-running broadcast news networks in the country and is home to a number of legendary shows such as The TODAY Show, Nightly News with Brian Williams, and Dateline NBC. MSNBC is a leader in cable television news, providing shows such as The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell, Weekends with Alex Witt, The Melissa Harris-Perry Show, Rachel Maddow, Up with Alec Baldwin, Disrupt with Karen Finney, and many others.
Ideal candidates for our production and editorial positions (for both MSNBC and NBC News) should be extreme news junkies who are interested in politics/political commentary, news production, and pop culture. Previous internship experience in a news environment is strongly preferred but not required.
The spring program is open only to undergraduate or graduate school graduates in the New York City area. Our internships are designed for applicants who can work a five-day, 35-hour week. As you might imagine, we’re looking for applicants with strong writing and reporting skills who are passionate about entertainment. Though you don’t need a journalism degree, you must have a proven commitment to pursuing a career in journalism—and you must have writing experience, whether through collegiate publications or professional internships. Experience with social media and Internet fluency—GIF-making, an encyclopedic knowledge of memes, etc.—are major pluses as well.
Edit interns at EW.com write blog posts, reported items, interviews, photo galleries, and TV recaps for EW.com. They may end up with bylines in the magazine as well. Interns will be expected both to take daily assignments and to pitch their own ideas. Some items will be straightforward news stories; others will be more creative opinion-based pieces. Either way, we’re looking for writing that is clear, factually accurate, and in line with EW.com’s voice.
The Boston Globe's summer internship program has been giving college students who are interested in journalism a peek into the industry for more than 50 years.
The majority of interns work as general assignment reporters in the City/Region section. Other reporter-interns work in Sports, Living/Arts, or Business. Reporting interns are treated as staffers hired to cover the city of Boston and locales throughout New England; they write breaking news stories as well as craft enterprise pieces. Interns go on daily assignments and leave the program with dozens of clips. Each reporter-intern works with the writing coach, and the program includes weekly educational seminars on journalism issues, including a critique session for the reporters.
The Globe also hires an intern to work on the News copy desk, as well as an intern for the Design department and for the Photo department. The copy editing intern works on stories from City/Region, National, Foreign and Business, including Page One stories. Design interns create sections fronts, as well as informational graphics; the photo intern shoots for all of the sections. Every intern is also responsible for producing online work.
The 12-week paid program has 10 slots, and is open to undergraduate students, graduating seniors, and journalism graduate school students who have not had professional experience. Because the internship is demanding and fast-paced, applicants must have had at least one prior daily newspaper internship.
The deadline to apply is November 1, 2010.
All applications MUST be mailed.
Additional information and the application can be found at bostonglobe.com/newsintern.
