Editorial Freelancer/Associate

We are looking for great writer to work on news-based and issue-based content with our editorial team. The role will involve regular content updates reflecting current events and trending national news. We provide unbiased facts about key issues, as well as political poll questions and fun quizzes to help people learn about key national issues. If you are a news junkie with a voice, we want you!

Freelance cop/crime reporter/s

We’re looking for a freelancer or freelancers to do some cops/crime reporting, primarily police blotters for the three editions but also some reporting.

One aspect would entail courting police in precincts on the UES, UWS and the west side of downtown and filing weekly copy of between 300 and 500 words for each of the three papers. The pay is $40 for each set, for a total of $120. Here's a prototype, but of a kind we'd like to ameliorate: http://www.westsidespirit.com/crime-watch/20150216/crime-watch/3

We're also looking for this reporter or reporters to do additional legwork on the stand-out blotter items – for instance, on a notable or unusual/odd caper, or on a neighborhood crime trend – that merit it. Ideally, he or she would write one, two or even three of those stories a week. Those would pay $50 each.
The precincts we need covered:
On the Upper West Side: the 20th Precinct, on West 82nd Street; and the 24th Precinct, on West 100th Street.

On the Upper East Side: 23rd Precinct, on East 102nd; and the 19th precinct, on East 67th Street.
And downtown: The First Precinct, at Varick and Beach Streets; the Sixth Precinct, on West 10th Street; and the 10th Precinct, on West 20th Street.

Regular Contributors

The Village Voice is looking for regular contributors to our online news section, which we update with stories throughout the day. (We include the best stories in our weekly print edition.) We need writers who can be on call for daily news assignments and who are able to pitch interesting, reported, local stories that can be turn around in a timely manner.

We want smart, interesting news stories about the unique people, places, and happenings that make up this city. We are not interested in aggregating the hourly news cycle, nor in hot takes on the day's events — though we do encourage reporting on and advancing intriguing items plucked from the constant stream churned out by the mainstream media.

Of course, we also seek reporters who are able to deliver intelligent writing that is up to the high standards of the Village Voice.

Study Abroad Contributor

Contributors are required to submit a 200-400 word article on a weekly basis, documenting their experiences and sharing the culture of the host city. Articles are submitted Wednesdays for posting the following week; this is an experience opportunity, there is no pay for the articles, but bylines and a bio on the website are included, as well as the chance for future opportunities.
