Newspaper Intern

Straus News, which in Manhattan comprises four weekly newspapers, is seeking capable and enthusiastic editorial interns for the spring semester, starting soon after the new year.
Interns work out of our Manhattan office on Seventh Avenue, near 28th Street, covering local neighborhood news on the Upper West Side, Upper East Side, downtown and Chelsea. Working closely with editorial staff, interns report on and write everything from arts features to investigations.
We require interns to commit to at least two full days. Days and times are flexible. Internships are unpaid and must be eligible for school credit.
Duties include:
• Reporting and writing profiles, Q&As, features, news, investigative pieces, briefs and whatever else comes our way
• Attending weekly editorial meetings
• Compiling event listings
• Pitching stories
• Helping research investigative stories
• Taking photographs

Interns will have the opportunity (and are expected) to report on schools, crime, small businesses, arts, local government, development, the arts, and, occasionally, food and dining.

We like stories that inform our smart, loyal readers about their neighborhoods, stories they are not likely to read elsewhere.
We do not publish reviews, either of arts events or food/restaurants, but we do write stories about the people behind those events and restaurants.
