Writer/Editor

Hell Gate is looking to bring on two writer-editors to join our small but mighty team, on a temporary, three-month basis (with the potential to stay for the long-term).

Does bringing back the dark art of blogging excite you? Are you itching to dive deep into an offbeat NYC story that you can’t picture anywhere else but Hell Gate? And most importantly: does the thought of building a sustainable, worker-owned news outlet that is beholden to no one but our readers and ourselves thrill you? If yes, apply!

Your roles and qualifications:

Hell Gate is small, and our writer-editors do literally everything, from reporting and writing to editing to crafting our social media posts and building out our newsletters.

Ideal candidates should have at least several years experience writing about New York, and should be comfortable in many roles: a breaking news reporter ready to dash to an unfolding scene, an investigative feature writer who can smell a rat and will go the distance to uncover it, an assigning editor who knows which freelance writer would be perfect to cover a story no one else has thought of, a story editor who can coax a raw draft into shining copy, a blogger who can riff on anything, and an opinion writer who can rain fire on her enemies. If even some of this applies to you, please consider applying!

Bonus points for familiarity with NYC communities and scenes that aren’t regularly covered by the media.

The job details:

—These positions are for a three-month, full-time contract, with the potential for an extension. There is also a possibility that after the three-month period, upon mutual agreement, writer-editors will be eligible to join the Hell Gate cooperative, with an ownership stake in Hell Gate and a voice in its governance.

—The pay range is $4,000 to $5,000/month, depending on experience. Hell Gate will also cover up to $500 of monthly healthcare premiums.

—Candidates must live in New York City. Remote work is encouraged (though you can choose to work out of our East Village office that’s also an abandoned bank).

—Women, people of color, people with disabilities, and LGBT candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

—We’re looking to fill these positions by early January 2023, with a mid- to end of January start date, so apply soon!

Reporter trainee

Applications are now invited for the DailyMail.com journalism training program which will begin in July 2023. Our trainees embark on a two-year long program that involves intense training, assessment and on-the-job experience at our New York office. When the program is complete, there is an opportunity to apply to work in the London or Sydney offices.
We are looking for young journalists with broad interests who want to cover national and international news at a fast pace for a global audience. The successful applicants will probably have a degree and will have shown a commitment to journalism by writing for their student newspaper/website and gained work experience in newsrooms.
The course starts with an intensive in-house training month. After that, the trainees will join the newsroom and work alongside experienced editors producing daily stories.

Research Assistant

The best candidates will have the following traits:

— Curiosity! You get distracted reading about the variety and weirdness of life — e.g. Wikipedia wormholes, a tattered copy of Newsweek from 1992, a book about steam heating on Grandma’s shelf, etc.
— Exceptional writing and editing skills
— Real drive, whether its to master an obscure online database or hop on a 6 am flight to Dallas for a surprise shoot
— Sleuthing skills on social media
— Unafraid to knock on doors and make cold calls
— Detail oriented, with a “turn every page” ethos
— Able do legal research on PACER and at local courts (or a desire to learn how!)
— Bonus points for speaking a second language, an ability to design pitch decks, audio and video editing experience, and any time previously spent on film sets

The candidate should be adept at handling a variety of breaking news stories. Japanese and/or Spanish language skills, and a background in International Affairs and/or American Politics/Society/Culture are a plus but not required.
