Newsperson - Business News

The Associated Press seeks a Reporter for the Business News department's economics team in Washington, D.C.

This position has a broad mandate: explaining the economy to readers in daily coverage of government and industry reports, and through enterprise stories. The successful candidate must be an aggressive reporter and critical thinker; someone who can cultivate sources, identify economic trends and write authoritative stories with flair and clarity.

Qualifications:

Proven knowledge of business and economics and a talent for writing clear and compelling stories with rigorous, thought-provoking analysis. Must be highly organized, with the ability to multitask, prioritize and focus on detail and accuracy in a fast-paced environment. The right candidate will be a self-starter and team player. Effective interpersonal skills and solid news judgment are critical. At least three years of experience in business or economics writing is required. The ideal candidate should have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent-level experience.

Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English language is required. Authorization to work in the United States for any employer is mandatory.

Business Reporter

Business Reporters at Axial focus on covering news of significance on the people, companies, and transactions that are occurring across every industry in the middle and lower middle market. These categories, which sit above main street but below the Fortune 500, are truly the beating heart of the American economy. You will be covering stories on unknown and under-covered entrepreneurs, the providers of capital who have financed their companies, and you’ll have an opportunity to report on and analyze closed transactions in these markets. Stories and content on related macro-economic trends or regulatory changes are also in play.

Responsibilities
- Produce original news and content on the markets we cover and serve
- Develop influential and credible sources for news across a wide range of subjects
- Manage a pipeline of stories and content that combines both daily coverage and features

2014-2015 Fellowship in International Human Rights

For recent graduates of law schools or graduate programs in journalism, international relations, area studies, or other relevant disciplines from universities worldwide.

Alan R. and Barbara D. Finberg Fellowship - Established in memory of Alan R. and Barbara D. Finberg, early supporters of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”), this fellowship is open to recent graduates (at the Master's level) in the fields of law, journalism, international relations, or other relevant studies. Graduates with LL.B. degrees or advanced degrees in other relevant disciplines may also be considered.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Fellows typically work full-time in Human Rights Watch’s New York or Washington, D.C. office or in some instances in another location. The Finberg Fellow works full-time for one year with Human Rights Watch.

Fellows monitor human rights developments in various countries, conduct on-site investigations, draft reports on human rights conditions, and engage in advocacy and media outreach aimed at publicizing and curtailing human rights violations.

Past fellows have conducted research and advocacy on numerous different issues in countries all over the world. Recent examples include projects on: police corruption and access to justice in Liberia; accessibility for people with disabilities in Russia; youth in solitary confinement in US prisons; hazardous child labor in artisanal gold mining in Tanzania; police abuse of gay men in Kyrgyzstan.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must demonstrate a strong background in international human rights and be committed to building a career in human rights. Research experience, including experience conducting interviews, ideally in the context of human rights research, is required. Field experience in human rights work is strongly desirable. Applicants must have exceptional analytic skills and excellent oral and written communications skills in English. Proficiency in one language in addition to English is strongly desired as is familiarity with countries or regions where serious human rights violations occur.

Applicants should be highly motivated and well-organized; able to work quickly and well under pressure, both independently and as a member of a team; able to juggle multiple tasks; and able to meet tight deadlines. The fellowship year will require creativity, initiative, perseverance, and flexibility while maintaining HRW's high methodological standards.

Prospective fellows must be recent graduates of law, journalism, international relations, or other relevant studies, or must provide evidence of significant, comparable, relevant work experience. Fellowships begin in September 2014.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: The salary for 2013-2014 fellows is US $55,000, plus excellent employer-paid benefits. The salary for 2014-2015 is currently under review and may be increased.

Online Content Writer

News Blogger

Bustle.com is seeking a freelance news writer to start ASAP to help fill its news vertical with intelligent, thoughtful content. The writer will cover the biggest news stories of the day and should be well versed in both national and world news as well as politics, health, tech, science, and more.

The news writer will be expected to produce roughly 4-5 posts per day during normal business hours (EST). Posts will mostly be informative news summaries and intelligently curated galleries, although original reporting will be encouraged. We are not looking for auto-pilot re-blogs, and applicants should be experienced writers/reporters/bloggers.

A minimum commitment of at least 3 days per week is required, although the position could be 4-5 days a week as well.

This position can be remote (or writers can work from our Brooklyn office), and is especially well-suited to full-time freelancers. We’re looking for someone with at least two years of blogging and reporting experience, a unique voice, pitch-perfect news judgement, and speedy delivery. Part-time Editorial Assistant, Medical

We are looking for an editorial assistant to work 3 days a week in our Noho office from 9 to 5. This could be a good job for a student in (or recent graduate of) NYU’s Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program.

No experience is required, but we do need someone with excellent grammar and attention to detail.

Tasks may include—but are not limited to—looking up references in PubMed, renumbering and reformatting references, running spellchecks, sending issues to our contributors, checking the accuracy of transcripts, coding information for our website, preparing information for the National Library of Medicine, and ordering office supplies. Experience with social media is a plus.
