Editor in Chief/Executive Director

The editor in chief of New Voices Magazine is responsible for every aspect of the content of an online Jewish student magazine with over 75,000 readers per semester. On the directorial side, the executive director of the Jewish Student Press Service is responsible for every aspect of the maintenance and continuation of an independent non-profit that has been around for over 40 years.

This is an exceptional opportunity for someone with an entrepreneurial streak: a self-starting young journalist and/or someone with an interest in non-profit management. Ideal applicants have some experience in print or web journalism and an interest in Jewish student affairs, as well as some experience in fundraising and/or grant-writing.

As the editor in chief, the ED/EIC determines the editorial direction of the magazine. The editor works with a team of student writers and editors (including staff writers, freelancers and volunteers) to generate innovative, high-quality content for newvoices.org – content that challenges the status quo in the Jewish community and explores the issues of the day from a unique student perspective.

As the editor in chief, the ED/EIC is directly responsible for building a network of contributors; as the executive director, the ED/EIC is directly responsible for building an audience of engaged readers.

As the executive director, the ED/EIC is responsible for development (donor cultivation, grant writing/reporting), publishing (ad sales, readership) and general administration (bill paying, file maintenance).

The joint position of ED/EIC answers only to a board of directors who have decade of collective experience in journalism and fundraising. They act as advisers, while maintaining a hands-off attitude toward content. The ED/EIC is responsible for planning biannual board meetings, and for maintaining contact with and mobilizing them between board meetings.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
• Strong writing and editing skills
• Strong managerial skills
• An interest in Jewish and student issues
• Extremely self-motivated
• Experience in journalism
• Experience in social media and digital journalism
• Experience with grants or other fundraising experience is a plus
• Experience with WordPress is a plus

Reporter

The Virgin Islands Daily News, a Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper covering the U.S. Virgin Islands, seeks an experienced daily newspaper reporter to join a team honored for its journalism with three consecutive national Associated Press Media Editors Awards for Public Service.

The successful candidate must have enthusiasm and stamina for daily and enterprise coverage mixed with investigative reporting built through grooming sources, crunching numbers and challenging officialdom. The reporter we seek also will have to be adept at writing about community events, people and activities, as needed.

Experience in using open records and open meetings laws as well as experience and skill in covering and analyzing government agencies and other public institutions will count in a candidate’s favor. We want to see clips showing a story or stories in which you yourself uncovered groundbreaking information rather than reported on investigations conducted by federal or local agencies. We also want at least two clips showcasing your storytelling talent.

Reporting in this locale is uniquely complicated and requires both sensitivity and confidence. This is not a job for raw beginners. You MUST have hands-on experience working on a daily news deadline. Please be aware that to succeed here, you need to have the personality and soul to adapt to both the joys and the difficulties of a racially, culturally and economically diverse environment. Please research the U.S. Virgin Islands and our newspaper BEFORE applying. Our islands are a paradise for journalists, but this can be a challenging place to live and work.

If you are interested and prepared, then e-mail a cover letter, resume and the required clips to Executive Editor Gerry Yandel at jobapps@dailynews.vi.
