Assistant Editor, Third-Party Content

The Assistant Editor, Third-Party Content, is responsible for coordinating, editing and publishing articles from a large cross-section of legal industry experts. This includes searching for potential articles/authors, reviewing article pitches, corresponding with attorneys and PR firms, executing publishing contracts, scheduling and managing articles in a custom content management system, and editing articles for in-house and AP style.

Third-party content is written by regularly scheduled authors, as well as commissioned by topic. We also review unsolicited article pitches on an ongoing basis. Article topics are practice- or industry-specific, analytical, and written with a business audience in mind.

While a certain amount of administrative work will be required, the position will be ideal for someone interested in future work as a copyeditor.

Required for consideration:
-Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English or related field; graduate degree preferred
-Copyediting experience and firm grasp of AP Style
-MS Word, Excel, Google Apps knowledge

Law360 offers extensive training on legal topics. Business or legal reporting experience is not required. However, professional reporting experience and strong writing and analytical skills are required to succeed in this job. Broadcast Desk Assistant

The Desk Assistant (DA) position is part of a six-month entry-level program aimed at providing practical experience in a broadcast news setting. Students graduating after the Fall 2013 semester as well as recent alums can apply.

The DAs are exposed to all aspects involved in producing a nightly television news program. This position is divided into rotations among the different units that compose the NewsHour: research, newsroom, tape library, reporting, and production. Over the course of the program, each of the 8 Desk Assistants hired will work in 3 of the 6 different rotations for a period of two months each. They also act as support staff for Senior Producers, Associate Producers, Reporters and Production Assistants, by answering phones, sorting mail, distributing paper and other administrative tasks. Finally, Desk Assistants will attend a series of breakfasts with various members of our organization including correspondents, producers and reporters.

Temporary Editorial Assistant

Weight Watchers Magazine, part of the Weight Watchers Publishing division, is looking for a temporary editorial assistant for Mondays-Wednesdays for Fall 2013 in New York, NY.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Researching and possibly reporting articles on topics including weight loss, health and fitness; keeping track of the latest scientific developments related to weight loss and related health conditions; calling in and returning products; assisting staff with ongoing editorial projects; administrative duties. An interest in weight loss, health, nutrition or fitness is preferred. We are a small staff, so the internship is very hands-on.

Copy editor

The Associated Press seeks a Reporter for the Business News department's economics team in Washington, D.C.

This position has a broad mandate: explaining the economy to readers in daily coverage of government and industry reports, and through enterprise stories. The successful candidate must be an aggressive reporter and critical thinker; someone who can cultivate sources, identify economic trends and write authoritative stories with flair and clarity.

Qualifications:

Proven knowledge of business and economics and a talent for writing clear and compelling stories with rigorous, thought-provoking analysis. Must be highly organized, with the ability to multitask, prioritize and focus on detail and accuracy in a fast-paced environment. The right candidate will be a self-starter and team player. Effective interpersonal skills and solid news judgment are critical. At least three years of experience in business or economics writing is required. The ideal candidate should have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent-level experience.

Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English language is required. Authorization to work in the United States for any employer is mandatory.

Business Reporter

Business Reporters at Axial focus on covering news of significance on the people, companies, and transactions that are occurring across every industry in the middle and lower middle market. These categories, which sit above main street but below the Fortune 500, are truly the beating heart of the American economy. 2014-2015 Fellowship in International Human Rights

For recent graduates of law schools or graduate programs in journalism, international relations, area studies, or other relevant disciplines from universities worldwide.

Alan R. and Barbara D. Finberg Fellowship - Established in memory of Alan R. and Barbara D. Finberg, early supporters of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”), this fellowship is open to recent graduates (at the Master's level) in the fields of law, journalism, international relations, or other relevant studies. Graduates with LL.B. degrees or advanced degrees in other relevant disciplines may also be considered.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Fellows typically work full-time in Human Rights Watch’s New York or Washington, D.C. office or in some instances in another location. The Finberg Fellow works full-time for one year with Human Rights Watch.

Fellows monitor human rights developments in various countries, conduct on-site investigations, draft reports on human rights conditions, and engage in advocacy and media outreach aimed at publicizing and curtailing human rights violations.

Past fellows have conducted research and advocacy on numerous different issues in countries all over the world. Recent examples include projects on: police corruption and access to justice in Liberia; accessibility for people with disabilities in Russia; youth in solitary confinement in US prisons; hazardous child labor in artisanal gold mining in Tanzania; police abuse of gay men in Kyrgyzstan.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must demonstrate a strong background in international human rights and be committed to building a career in human rights. Research experience, including experience conducting interviews, ideally in the context of human rights research, is required. Field experience in human rights work is strongly desirable. Applicants must have exceptional analytic skills and excellent oral and written communications skills in English. Proficiency in one language in addition to English is strongly desired as is familiarity with countries or regions where serious human rights violations occur.

Applicants should be highly motivated and well-organized; able to work quickly and well under pressure, both independently and as a member of a team; able to juggle multiple tasks; and able to meet tight deadlines. The fellowship year will require creativity, initiative, perseverance, and flexibility while maintaining HRW's high methodological standards.

Prospective fellows must be recent graduates of law, journalism, international relations, or other relevant studies, or must provide evidence of significant, comparable, relevant work experience. SALARY AND BENEFITS: The salary for 2013-2014 fellows is US $55,000, plus excellent employer-paid benefits. The salary for 2014-2015 is currently under review and may be increased.
